In response to a 71.1% “YES” vote for new libraries on March 11, 2003, plans are moving forward rapidly for the first of two new buildings, the Spanish River Library. The $19.8 million referendum will be supplemented by State Library Construction grants as well as private fund-raising.
The Spanish River Library will be 40,970
square feet. The new Downtown Library will
be located on the old Causeway Lumber site located at NW Boca Raton Blvd.
and NW 4th Street. That
building is expected to be 40,000-50,000 square feet on two full floors.
The Spanish River Library
The site for the Spanish River Library
couldn’t be more beautiful or convenient. The building will be on the north
side of Spanish River Blvd., halfway between Military Trail and the I-95
overpass. Two hundred and seven (207) parking spaces will be on both sides
of an entryway that leads to a circular drive with a covered drop-off.
The spacious site also allows for something patrons have long requested…
a drive-up book drop! The rear will be the focal point of the building,
with the back of the building facing the existing lake. The rear
wall will be impact resistance glass and almost every public space will
feature a beautiful, restful view.

But, it’s what’s inside that counts and the design incorporates those things that residents said they want in their new libraries, and more. There will be a significant focus on children and teens, with a larger storytime room, a room just for teens, and a large space for children’s materials and activities. A meeting room will be available for larger programs. The building will feature many new electronic resources with two computer labs, an electronic classroom, and several areas for wireless capabilities. For those who want some quiet in their public library, a second floor quiet study room will have glass walls facing out to the lake. And, of course, there will be books, reference materials, and an up-to-date audio-visual collection.
In addition, there will be a café for coffee, a bagel, or lunch. A rear terrace facing the lake will provide space to eat outside and will also provide space for children’s programs. A beautiful rooftop terrace will allow library users a space to sit, read, and relax. It will also be a spectacular place for a party or event and will be available for rent.
